Royal Gorge RIO River Clean-Up

Royal Gorge RIO is teaming up with American Rivers to sponsor 2022's Royal Gorge RIO River Clean-Up!  Did you know that the most littered item is food packaging?  Mostly from single use fast food restaurants, plastic wrapping, cardboard and paper.  Let's do our part to keep our river beautiful and clean.

Get geared up and ready to help!

What to Wear: Clothes that you can get dirty or wet, sturdy shoes (no flip-flops), long pants or high boots to avoid scratches, gloves.

What to Bring:  Sunscreen, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle. We will provide hand sanitizer, trash bags, and lunch.

Site 1: Canon City River Walk 12:30 PM

Location: Centennial Park to Mackenzie Boat Ramp

Shore clean up and boat access

Site 2: Royal Gorge 9:30 AM

Location: Parkdale Boat Ramp to Centennial Park

Boat access 

Site 3:  Big Horn Sheep Canyon 9:30 AM

Location:  Pinnacle Rock Boat Ramp to Parkdale Boat Ramp

Shore clean up along Hwy 50 picnic and day use sites and boat access 

Site 4: Upper Bighorn

Location: Lone Pine to Pinnacle Rock 9:30 AM

Shore clean up along Hwy 50 picnic and day use sites and boat access

Who Can Help?

Anyone and everyone.  Most volunteers should expect to be able to walk or boat along the river bank and pick up litter, however there are many jobs that do not require significant physical activity.  We encourage everyone , regardless of ability or age, to participate in the manner in they feel most comfortable.

H2H and Slalom Series

Participant Information

Local teams and businesses can register in friendly competition at Canon City’s Whitewater Park. This event is intended for community members to participate in an amateur recreational whitewater race series, to network, and come together as a community.  However, members of USRA are invited to participate, but will be compete in a expert division. 


This series is not a prequalifer for regional or national races, prizes will only be awarded to first place team in each league.  Prize is cash prize which is 75% of registration profit for each league. Every participant will receive a t-shirt with teams logo on back and annual membership to ACA. 


Please arrive a little early for course inspection, waivers, registration, etc. Storm rafts will be provided, teams may optionally bring their own boat. Individuals competing in Kayak, SUP, or Duckies must bring their own equipment.

Participants under 18 will need guardian to submit waivers.


R4 Raft Slalom: $275.00 for the entire series

Teams of 4 will participate in Storm Slalom Race with one at least member of the opposite sex in each race. Teams may add 2 additional members at any time in the series as subs with a $10 fee. Team roster may not exceed 6 individuals including subs, so choose your team wisely. Each team will be allowed to have two races if time allows. Teams will be able to use their best time for results. Course will be opened between 5:30-7:30 PM


Individual H2H/Slalom: $65.00 for the entire series

Kayak, SUP, and Duckies will compete in individual leagues. Participants will compete H2H through course and will be allowed two races if time allows. Individuals will use their best time for results. All participants will receive receive commemorative t-shirt. Course will be open between 4-5PM. 


Scoring: Each team/participant timed results will added together at the final race on August 13. The lowest combined time receives first place, second, an so on. Faults will have 5 second penalty added to race to each gate touched during the race. So keep it clean! No shows will be given a timed score that is 10 seconds lower that the slowest time recorded for that race.
